Call to worship

Let us worship God, our light and our salvation.

The Lord is the stronghold of our lives.

We desire to live in God’s house and to seek God in his holy temple.

We have come with shouts of joy, to sing and to make music to the Lord.

Let us worship God in spirit and in truth.

Teach us your ways and make straight our paths

in this hour of worship and always.

 

Hymn: TIS 52 “Let us sing to the God of salvation” We sang to the God who is our rock...our everything!

Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving

Deokhee praised God on our behalf, calling on our loving God for whom we had gathered together, seeking to worship him. Deokhee praised God for being the beginning of all life who has known us from before we were born. He acknowledged that God knows our innermost thoughts.

When I think about life and the idea of anything being alive, something like spaghetti starts to form in my brain. Life itself is beyond comprehension and is our greatest clue to the existence of God. And I wonder how many of us try to pretend in the presence of God.

Prayer of Confession

Before this God we confessed that we had sinned against him and against other people. We confessed that we have only cared about ourselves and asked for forgiveness in Jesus' name. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Then in the name of he who died, rose and reigns Deokhee declared that the old life is gone and the new life begun. Thanks be to God.

 Announcements

The announcements included a big "Thank you" to all who had participated in any way in the Lamington drive

 Children’s talk: Deokhee involved the children through a little quiz, starting with what we call people from various countries. Koreans come from Korea; Americans come from America and so but it broke down when he got to Australia because the answer then was "Aussies" but that did not prevent him drawing out the point that people who belong to Christ are called Christians. This was followed by a very catchy chorus which Deokhee ably led.

We then offered each other the Sign of Peace which is a significant opportunity for all of us to declare our love for each other.

 Offering While the offering was being received the Men's Quartet led us with "When the Saints Come Marching In" after which Deokhee dedicated our gifts to the glory of God.

 

Hymn: TIS 745, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God” Deokhee can really sing and this enhanced the congregation's effort to sing this hymn with its cogent message as a round, producing a lovely offering in song form.

 Bible Readings: Val delivered the readings: Mark 12: 38-44, 1 Kings 17: 8-16 ​

Sermon

Deokhee spoke on the bible reading from Mark, focusing on the offering of the widow whose few coins would have gone unnoticed in the clatter of all the coins being offered.

But Jesus noticed. Keep that in mind when you don't think you have much to offer. He then spoke of a time when he was helping out at Parramatta mission, which is very noisy around mealtime. There in the middle of the noise of voices, plates and cutlery there sat and old man, saying grace. He was offering all he had..his thanks. Deokhee also told of the widow approached by Elijah for food. She only had enough flour and oil left for a final meal for herself and her son before they surrender to death because of the famine. However Elijah convinced her to share that meal with him promising that God would provide. God did provide and the widow had oil and flour until the famine ceased.

God will provide.

This service has been about ordinary people doing ordinary things which have been seen as being of great value. We don't have to move mountains to carry out the mission God has given us, we simply have to be true of heart.

 Hymn: TIS 342 “When I survey the wondrous cross” For so many Christians all around the world, this is central to their belief and their lives spin on this axis.

 Musical interlude before prayer

During this time we thought about our own concerns and those close to our hearts, whether they concerned loved ones or people whose lives are being destroyed by injustice in so many places around the world, including in our own country.

 Prayers of Intercession – Deokhee prayed for healing and comfort for those who are sick and suffering. He prayed to our most gracious God, thankful for God's belief in us to carry out his work, declaring God to be the mystery that binds us together. He asked for God's hand upon those who share the heavy burden of political leadership and for those who lead Marsden Road and Ryde Uniting Churches. Amen.

 Hymn: TIS 256 “From heaven you came, helpless babe” God came as a servant and now he asks that we serve him and each other.

Sunday Service Marsden Road Uniting Church 1 November 2015

 

Welcome- All Saints Day-Those who could, gathered outside to recall that it has been 150 years since the foundation stone was laid, giving thanks for all those who grew this church.  We then entered the church singing Hymn TIS 455 ‘For all the saints who from their labours rest' Thanks was given for all those who have gone before us, who established this church through the grace of God, in which we are nurtured. We give unending thanks and praise to God but the saints who have preceded us have been his hands and voice.

Call to worship

We are called together onto the same path;

 

Together we follow the lead of freedom and justice.

We are called together to be of one mind;

Together we love God and neighbour with our all.

We are called together into life;

Together we put our trust in God, our Saviour.

 Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving

This prayer was a reminder that it is through trust in God that we find our strength, our encouragement, our friendships and our certainty when we are uncertain. We declared our trust in God for all things.

Prayer of Confession

The story of Ruth and Naomi challenged us to reflect on our own faithfulness, and who or what we see as our source of strength when circumstances become difficult. It made us reflect on our faithfulness to the people and causes to whom we have pledged commitment. Then we asked forgiveness when we fail, as we do.

Words of Assurance

Hear then God's words of grace to us. Our sins are forgiven! Thanks be to God.

Remembering those who have followed Jesus, who have taught us, loved us, inspired us and encouraged us. Those who wished walked forward to light tea light candles and gave thanks for those who have gone before us.

 Offering The offering was dedicated to the work of spreading God's love and grace.

Hymn TIS 537 “Let us talents and tongues employ” This song encapsulates the experience of communion. We feel joined with each other as we, together, open ourselves to God's healing, restoring us to wholeness, fit to do his will in the world. This hymn was sung with much confidence, reflecting our faith in our source.

 Holy Communion (selections)

Christ our Lord invites us to his table: all who seek him.

 

The words of the institution were those given to us by Paul:

This is my body and blood which is given up for you, for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this in memory of me.

 The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

And so we praise you:

Holy, holy, holy Lord. God of Power and Might. Heaven and Earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us. Grant us Peace.

The Distribution We remained seated while Jan, Ruth, Elaine and Carolyn distributed the elements. When all the bread was distributed we ate together, and when all the juice was distributed we drank together. Together with God and with each other.

Prayer after Communion We thank you that you have fed us in the sacrament, united us in Christ and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet prepared for all people. Amen.

 Bible Readings- Ruth 2:1-23, 4:13-17 Faithfulness is the theme. Ruth's faithfulness to Naomi; Boaz faithfulness in looking after Ruth's welfare in the field because of her faithfulness to his relative Naomi and Ruth's faithfulness to Naomi, even after her position was secured by her marriage to Boaz. And God's faithful love to two woman who were faithful to him.

Mark 12: 28-34 Jesus is quizzed about which of the commandments is the greatest. Clearly a ploy to entrap him. However, Jesus answered in a way that covered all the commandments and more, leaving his opponents with nothing to say.

 Sermon- ‘LIFE for Naomi and Ruth through the loving kindness of God’ Jan began with reference to the disasters that strike people and how, as a church, we respond. She reminded us that we do not have to face such disasters, where people have no idea where their next meal will come from. But Naomi and her family did have to face such a situation which resulted in them being in a foreign country with the sons growing to adulthood and marrying women from that country. But that good outcome changed, with Naomi's husband and both sons dying, leaving three widows. Naomi realized her best option was to return home but thought it best for her daughters-in-law to stay in their country and marry countrymen. One agreed but Ruth did not and said: 'Don't urge me to go...Your people will be my people and your God my God."

So they returned to Judah which was experiencing a renewal and the crops were plentiful. God was faithful and provided……and Ruth gleaned in the fields of Boaz, a kinsman of Naomi. Boaz, seeing the loyalty and love of Ruth, a foreigner, towards his kinswoman,

Naomi, kept a watchful eye over her and saw that she was able to glean with success and without being harassed, thereby providing for herself and Naomi. According to the law, a closer relative had a claim over Ruth and her father-in-law's land but when he relinquished his claim, Boaz married Ruth, so that her position and that of Naomi was secure.

A situation of grief and loss changed into a secure life of love with hope for the future. God was faithful. Ruth and Naomi were faithful to each other and Boaz was faithful to God and to his responsibilities. It turned out well. A thought. Only God could know how well things would be but Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz didn't know but were faithful because they saw it as the thing they had to do. Situations arise like that in life. There are times when we have to be faithful, whether it will profit us or not. We simply know we have to.

 Hymn TIS 683 “God, when human bonds are broken’ When things are broken between us and others, give us faith, hope and love to send out tendrils to draw people together and allow them to see the bonds that hold them together that are simply over shadowed for a time.

 Musical interlude before prayer as we contemplated our personal situations.

Prayers of Intercession – Delma thanked God for answered prayer and asked God's strength and support for the families of those killed in the Russian airplane crash and those refugees suffering in detention. She prayed for all those wandering the world and all those who offer them the hand of friendship. She prayed to God for those close to us and the carers of the community - teachers, medical workers, Firies, Ambos, Police and the military. Care for them and heal their wounds suffered in the trauma they witness. Delma prayed for the church: locally, nationally and internationally and especially the leadership of MRUC that it will spread God's grace to heal this broken world.

 Hymn TIS 154 ‘Great is your faithfulness’ Despite knowing that this is so, it seems we need to experience it anew so many times to remind us that it is true. It's not that God stops being faithful - ever, but we stop noticing unless there is a crisis.

 Blessing  The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God. And may the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you now and always.

Sunday Service Marsden Road Uniting Church 18th October 2015

Call to Worship  Lita opened our Worship this morning, telling us she was feeling “Happy and Excited to be visiting us again.” 

We sing of your steadfast love that never ceases - Praise the name of the Lord!

We lift our hands to the God of all ages - Praise the name of the Lord!

We will embrace each moment and worship with unfettered hearts. Praise the name of the Lord!

Lita acknowledged the many different feelings and experiences that our week had brought and asked God to accept us each for what we are and what we can give today.

Hymn  TiS 154                       “Great is Your Faithfulness”

Thomas Obadiah Chisolm (1866-1960) was a man whose fragile health made his life difficult; so this wonderful hymn is a lesson to each of us about accepting the great gifts for life that come through God’s great Love.  His friend William Runyan, composed the music because he was greatly moved by the words and it was published in 1923.  George Beverly Shea made this hymn speak to the hearts of many people through the Billy Graham evangelical crusades in the middle decades of the 20th century.  Like me you might remember the crusades.

Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving:  It was easy to hear these prayers with our hearts, after the experience of singing about God’s amazing Faithfulness.  Lita thanked God; “For bringing us here in this place, because here we experience loving one another – O what joy it must bring you when we come together before you in unity.”

Prayers of Confession & Words of Assurance:  Lita led us to confess our sins – known and unknown and asked for courage for each of us to rid ourselves of the sins “that hold onto us so tightly”.   “Where sin abounds, grace abounds even more.  When we sincerely repent and ask God for forgiveness through Christ, Jesus declares, ‘Your Sins are forgiven’.”   

  

Children’s Message  Using familiar “emoticons” to depict happy, angry, sad and excited faces, Lita talked to the children about “feelings” and asked them to raise the relevant emoticon faces as she talked about Job and his feelings.  She finished by asking them to always remember; “God never leaves us no matter how we are feeling - because God loves us.”

Offering / Prayer:  Nerida and Alan were our stewards this morning and when the offering was blessed Lita also offered a prayer to dedicate the Christmas Gift Boxes our church family has prepared to send overseas to bring joy to many poorer children and families. 

Hymn 185 SinS 414               “The Steadfast Love of the Lord never Ceases”

This little hymn, written by Edith McNeill, is also inspired by the same passage in Lamentations which inspired Thomas Chisolm in our first hymn. 

    

Bible Reading:      Job 38: 1-7, 34-41  Page 399             Hebrews 4: 12-16   Page 936

Joan read the Bible passages for us this morning in a compelling way - and on reflection and upon revisiting this whole chapter, it is an amazing tirade where the Lord speaks to Job about the magnificence and intricate dovetailing of God’s entire creation.  I realize I have always worn blinkers when Job was mentioned because I thought everything about his story was all about complete misery.  This was followed by the reading from Hebrews which begins; “For the word of God is alive and active… It sifts the purposes and thoughts of the heart” and finishes with the thought that Jesus was sent to be one of us and live and understand the temptations and difficulties of life on earth.  He was tested in every way.

Reflection:            “I’ve got you! – OR – God holds us during our weakest moments”

Lita told us she would share a personal reflection on the story of Job and I found this approach gave me a much more sanguine view of Job and his woes - I still had lingering negative feelings about this miserable story going back to childhood - so turning this into a story that talks about; “The kind of God that we have – a God who is the source of hope; a God who creates, and renews and nurtures; who knows us and all creation so well and is able to completely bring together his entire creation in wisdom and love” brought a bright light to focus on the real meaning of the message Job and his many woes can deliver.  “It talks about God’s goodness and sovereignty; a God who is strong and mighty but also gracious and merciful.” 

Lita asked us if we have ever had such suffering that we, like Job, have felt that we had lost God.  Yes we all know that life can be very hard and very complicated – and sometimes like Job we rant a little at God for deserting us. 

Lita gave us some examples from the Bible about the way God is with us. Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is near to the broken-hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”  We heard how; “Life can be fragile, but God is always strong!”  Proverbs 18;10 “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe.”  We heard that experiences can sometimes be bad; “But God is always good!” Psalm 145;9 “The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.”

“Job really wanted God to explain to him why he was suffering.  He asked that if he was faithful, why then did he have to go through such a difficult situation.  And then God spoke.  But God’s answer was certainly not as Job expected.  God told him things that human beings cannot fully know.  He told of his creation in the deepest sea, on the highest mountains, things big and small, the funny ones, the wild and the endearing.”  He told him in that magnificent way expressed in Job Chapter 38 of all the wonders - and somehow Job understood.  Job understood that; “God is always good and God is always in control; that God is sovereign and God cares about our everyday life; that God knows and cares for every single part of his creation; that God is mighty yet merciful; that the complexities in life are known to God and he can make things work for good for everyone and everything he created.  And most of all - that God is always there for us, even though we sometimes do not feel it.”

“In Christ, God is saying to us today – ‘do not be afraid, I’ve got you.  I’ve got you in my strong arms.  I’ve got you in my loving arms.  I’ve got you in my saving arms.”  AMEN.

Hymn TiS 590                        “What a Friend we have in Jesus”

We continued in our reflective feelings by singing this greatly loved hymn, written by Joseph Medlicott Scriven, while remaining quietly seated in the pews.  After several great tragedies, Joseph lived a life of sacrifice and devotion, giving away everything he could to those people in need and physically helping those who needed help - for the rest of his life. 

                          

Before we share in the Prayers of Intercession it is our tradition to listen to a reflective organ interlude.  Today this was interlude was played, in celebration of a lifetime of Faith, by our old friend Tom, who will turn 100 during this week.  Jack spoke a little about Tom and invited everyone to his 100^th Birthday Party at morning tea after the service.  Around 25 of Tom’s family members were with him and his ‘church family’ for the service today and some even travelled from his original homeland of Wales to join the celebration.  Knowing that our friend Betty who will soon be 101 was also with us in the service today – I certainly spent my time reflecting on the positive Christian influence these two fine centenarians have shared with us all. 

Prayers of the People:  Today Lita presented these prayers for the people of our church and for the world.  There were prayers for those people we know, and the people and situations throughout the world, whose needs touch our hearts.   We were reassured that God knows each of them by name and will hear them when they call.   Then we shared together in the words of the Lord’s Prayer.

Hymn TiS 619                        “Have Faith in God My Heart”   

Blessing    Lita sent us home with the words: “Spring up! Resolve to live confidently and with faith in the goodness of God.  Throw off your cloak! Be ready to say yes when life offers you transformation.  God bless you with refuge in time of need and joy in time of good fortune.  Christ hear you when you cry and attend to you with compassion.”   Amen.

Sharing in the joy of Tom’s Birthday Party was a blessing to us all.  Jack reminded us that Tom was born in the first year of World War 1 when times were hard.  He had the misfortune to be seeking his first job at the time of the Great Depression and he has faced many challenges in his 100 years.  Coming to live in Australia at the age of 70 would certainly have been a big upheaval in his life.  What life lessons Tom can pass on about the importance of faith and hope and hard work!  I just love his gentle smile, his happy chuckle and his friendliness to everyone - all the time.  

Sunday Service Marsden Road Uniting Church 11 September 2015

                                     Reception of member by transfer.

Apologies to all for the tardiness of the production of this blog and what I anticipate to be its briefness. The birth of a second grandchild early Tuesday morning meant much loss of sleep and very active days with the first grandchild, a two-year-old. She has just returned most unwillingly to her family home. Her preferred option would be that we all live together in the one house - Parents, GPs, Aunty and all. She and her new sister are the greatest treasures we have ever received and for which we are so grateful and thankful.

Call to worship

Lord, you are enthroned as the Holy One,

The one whom Israel praise.

Our ancestors put their trust in you;

They trusted you and you saved them.

They called to you and escaped danger;

They trusted you and were not disappointed. (Psalm 22:3-5)

And so we give you our praise and worship.

Hymn TIS 133 “O worship the king, all glorious above.” The hymns of this service were written around membership of the church, who as individuals and as a group, exist because we are enlivened by Him, the glorious one, who evokes our worship.

Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving

Today, the person being received into membership was me, the writer of this blog. As such, the prayer of thanksgiving was richly applicable, thanking God for the life abundant that I have received by his generous hand. Jan thanked God for all he had done in Christ, whose sacrifice enabled people like me and you to know this life abundant, experiencing the full power of God's spirit and without which we are mere dust and ashes. "We worship you in songs and hymns of praise. To you be the glory, forever and ever." Amen.

Prayer of Confession "Loving and redeeming God, in Christ you have shown us the paths of true discipleship. You have taught us the ways of your realm. Forgive us that we so often stray from those paths. Forgive us that we choose death over life, power over justice, wealth over service." Forgive us...correct us...move us...call us back to you. Amen.

Words of Assurance "May the grace of God, shown in Jesus and made present through the Spirit, assure us that we are set free from sin to live in joy. Our sins are forgiven."

Reception of a member by transfer- Margaret Johnston

In this service I was welcomed as a member of the Uniting Church and pledged my life to fellowship with our God and his people. I promised to share in the life and work of the church, which I did with much willingness. This is the place where I find my purpose and these are the people who extend their hands in friendship and support.

Let us pray: "O God our loving parent, we praise you for calling us to faith in Jesus and for gathering us into the Church, the body of Christ. We thank you for this congregation of your people and rejoice that you have added to our number Margaret, our sister in the faith. Together may we live in the Spirit, building up one another in love, sharing in the life of the Church, and serving the world in God’s mission; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord." Amen.

Hymn TIS 599 “Take my life and let it be, consecrated Lord to thee” in singing this hymn, we affirmed our promises of yesterday, last year, or so long ago, to be wholly God's.

Offering Once more we offered back just a little of God's blessing to us to be used in the church's work of extending his kingdom of love to those around us.

Bible Readings- ​Hebrews 4:12-16 and ​​​Mark 10:17-31​​

Sermon- “Call and cost of discipleship” Totally appropriate to the theme of membership of God's church. Jan spoke of the affect of the media on our thinking, leading many to believe that ownership of large numbers of the latest, trendy items is the way to achieve happiness and peace. She added that it is also difficult to discipline ourselves to a budget, to a diet of healthy food, to an active life. We like to indulge ourselves. My special indulgence in sleeping in...then I'm really unhappy with myself about all the time I have wasted.

In terms of possessions bringing happiness I learned a good lesson early in life. Possessions get old, wear out, break. And then, if we are depending on possessions for our happiness...guess what....we have to buy new possessions again, and again, and again. That is obviously not a good path to follow.

Jan spoke of a DVD called "Happy" by Roko Belic in which it was shown that the values of people are important to achieving happiness. Those who were concerned for others and acted in the best interests of others were far happier than those who lived for themselves, and the ephemeral things of life. Many people are always longing for that something that is missing in their lives. Jan explained that the missing thing is God and if anyone tries to replace God with other things they aren't satisfied...the longing continues. This is what happened to the Rich Young Ruler. God expected his all and the young man couldn't  bring himself to give it and went away sad. And he would have continued to be sad.

Hymn TIS 609 “May the mind of Christ my Saviour” We don't stand a chance on our own. The forces that operate in this world are too determined and too many for us to stand up to them by ourselves. Take a mate. That's a Mate with a capital M.

Musical interlude before prayer During this time we contemplated our private needs and concerns. After this time Jan led the Prayers of Intercession.

Hymn TIS 233 “I will sing the wondrous story” Those of us who have experienced the joy of that abundant life can hardly stop ourselves doing so!

Blessing The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God.  And may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Jan welcomed us all, calling our attention to the warm spring day and to the memory of St. Francis who preached to the animals and asked them to praise God.

Call to worship

Bless the Lord, all you his creatures

And do not forget God’s blessings

O Lord, how manifold are your works,

In wisdom you have made them all, the earth is full of your creatures.

Hymn TIS 100
“All creatures of our God and King” v1,3,5,7. We sang with gusto, reflecting the thankfulness and awe we all have for all of God's creation that accompanies us and sustains us throughout our lives. I'm not strong on humility but thinking on the words of a hymn like this leaves me helpless to be anything but thankful and totally aware of my utter inability to deserve any of it.

Prayers of Praise and Thanksgiving (Together)

We thank you loving God, for all your gifts in creation, the beauty of earth, of sea and sky,
For the riches of the mountains, fields and rivers, for all creatures that breathe and move.
We thank you Lord for the songs of birds, the perfume of flowers and trees and for the pets that you have given us to care for. We pray that we will honour you for all your works and give you the glory and praise of our whole hearts. AMEN

Prayer of Confession

How quick we are to blame when things go wrong, O Lord.
We expect blessings and rewards and assume you have left us when things aren't as we expect them to be. Forgive us for being so self-centred. Teach us to value the common good and to be servants of your Gospel. Amen

Words of Assurance

Hear then Christ's word of Grace to us: our sins are forgiven.

Thanks be to God.

Blessing of Pets

People spoke about pets who were present in body or in photographs, revealing the very special relationships we have with our companions and the benefits they bring to us.

Hymn TIS 429
“Break thou the bread of life.” It is a simple hymn of just two verses but it focuses our whole attention on our reason for being present this morning. When we find Jesus, we are given a freedom that is difficult to explain and can't be gained by any other means.

Communion

We are so familiar with this service and even though some of us have been experiencing it on  a monthly basis for over 70 years, there is never an occasion that we are not moved by its significance. That God himself should take in human flesh and suffer to bring freedom to us is beyond comprehension. So as we raise our voices to sing:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory,

Hozanna in the highest,

Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord

Hosannah in the highest.

We are moved by the words, written by someone else, which express our deep need (but lack the words to say) to praise God for a gift beyond imagination.

Jan reminded us of the institution of the meal in which we were about to partake and then:

Receive this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ, and feed on him in your heart by faith with thanks with thanksgiving.

Jan, Joan, Pat and Alan then distributed the elements.

We thank you, Lord that you have fed us in this sacrament and united us with Christ.

Bible Readings
Jan brought to us:  Psalm 104:10-24 ​​​in which the Psalmist speaks to God, in awe of the treasure of beautiful creation given to humans by Him.

Matthew 6:25-33. Jesus makes it plain for anyone who has failed to notice, the way the world works. Worrying about tomorrow gets us nowhere. He points to the rest of creation, showing how God cares for it without any input from any of its members and then says that we will be cared for in just the same way.

Sermon- “Celebrating God’s creation & St Francis of Assisi’

Jan began, speaking about the gospel reading, where Jesus was instructing not only his disciples, but anyone else who is within earshot about the danger of being too attached to possessions and how being concerned about our possessions "can get in the way of knowing God and serving him," Jesus was teaching those who were listening of the need to trust God. He pointed out the logic of our being more important to God than flowers and yet the flowers want for nothing. Jesus didn't just tell. This is how he lived his life...he provided us with the example to follow.

Jan then suggested that these words could easily have been the ones that motivated St. Francis to live the life he followed. St. Francis was born into a life of privilege. His father had a textile business but St. Francis thought that boring and imagined himself living a more exciting and heroic lifestyle. So when war broke out he signed up.

Being untrained, he was captured almost instantly. However his dress revealed him as being rich and worth a good random so he was thrown in solitary where he had visions. As a result, later, when he came upon a leper while riding, he embraced him experiencing a great freedom. From there he followed God, ministering to lepers, living a life of poverty, and preaching. A special aspect of St. Francis' devotion to God was his devotion to a God's creatures, giving them protection where he could and even encouraging the plants to thrive.

St Francis' focus was on service to God through service to his creatures, human and otherwise. Enough said.

Prayers of Intercession
Laurel led us in prayer thanking God for his love and care. She then prayed for the particular concerns of the congregation at Marsden Road UC. Lauren directed our thought to the needs of those all around the world in emergency situations, lacking even the most basic needs for survival, that relief will be brought to them. She raised the subject of assist animals. Those who assist the blind, the police, rescue workers and custom officers. She also prayed for companion animals who bring a richness to their owner's lives and farm animals who a part of the workday of the farming community. She thought of those people in developing countries who are learning to run small businesses dependent on raising small animals and finally, the welfare agencies protecting the proper treatment of animals. Amen
